England pulled off a miracle against Columbia, winning it’s Round of 16 match on penalty kicks.

When England surrendered its lead over Columbia in extra time on Tuesday, gloomy doesn’t even begin to describe how fans felt. Nothing is more English than broken hearts on the pitch of a match involving the national team, especially in the World Cup.

That’s why it’s so incomprehensible that England was able to overcome its penalty kick woes to beat Colombia. Not since 1966 have the English brought home the World Cup, and it’s been over a decade since the team has advanced further than the Round of 16.

When it went to penalty kicks, things looked absolutely dire.

Supporters watching in pubs around the world went bananas when England first made a match-saving stop and then won on a penalty kick to advance past Colombia.

I’ve been informed that what we witnessed was a miracle. That was by our soccer lead and resident Englishman Jake Walerius. Based on primal nature of his joyous screaming when England made an improbable penalty kick save — and some damn song he’s been playing all day — it was indeed a historic win.

The road to the World Cup Final is still a tough one, especially after watching England almost blow it straight out of the gate. But perhaps momentum has been built with this win that will carry the World Cup back to the birthplace of soccer.

Football is apparently coming home, and this win over Colombia seems to be the turning of the key in the door.
