France beat Uruguay 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the World Cup on Friday, July 6. Here are all the highlights from the match.

France beat Uruguay 2-0 in the World Cup quarterfinals on Friday, July 6, thanks to goals either side of halftime from Raphael Varane and Antoine Grizemann (with an assist from Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera).

Uruguay started the game brightly, but Les Bleus began to take control after the first 15 minutes. For the most part, however, this was a cagey, defensive contest between two teams who are confident defending in numbers.

The breakthrough came from a set-piece, Varane flicking in Griezmann’s free-kick at the top of the box in the 40th minute. It was nice header from the Real Madrid man, but Uruguay will have been frustrated to concede so easily.

They almost equalized minutes later — from a free-kick in a similar position to the one France had just scored from — but Martin Caceres was denied by a superb Hugo Lloris save, diving at full stretch to his right.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with France mostly controlling possession, but careful not to commit to many bodies forward in attack. Kylian Mbappe, the star of their round of 16 win, was relatively quiet on the right.

As Uruguay began to take more risks going forward, France doubled their lead, this time with help from an error by Muslera. Griezmann took a speculative shot from 20 yards, which swerved slightly, but was still almost straight at Muslera, who could only parry into his own goal.
