MLB All-Star Game 2018: 5 most likely MVP candidates
3. Freddie Freeman, 1B/Atlanta Braves
There was a team in the 1990s that dominated the National League and spent a good portion of time collecting World Series trophies. That team was the Atlanta Braves. Obviously, they were a different team back then, but there’s a player TODAY that is helping make this year’s team look vaguely familiar to that team of old…you know him as Freddie Freeman.
He’s dominating the National League right now and will likely be in the running for some awards after the season is done. His 16 home runs this year have helped keep his batting average around the .315 mark, and is making his third trip to the mid-summer classic.
If he keeps the pace he is on right now, he’ll help Atlanta stay in the postseason discussion. But of course, that is all AFTER the July 17 All-Star Game. In the meantime, he’ll take his current performance and check in to D.C. along with first-time teammate Nick Markakis. Now just imagine if he were to belt a longball during the course of the game. It would just add divisional insult to the damage he’s already inflicted on Washington and practically every other team in the National League.
Freeman received more first-place votes than any other player in the National League, and is making his case for a very strong season. So he will be definitely a player to watch and see what he can contribute to the NL in the process. At least the least, if he can plate a run or two and find a way to help achieve victory, he’d be a top candidate for that MVP trophy.
