Fantasy Baseball 2018: Keep your eyes on Andrew Suarez
By Bill Pivetz
If you are looking for a fantasy baseball boost in starting pitching, Andrew Suarez with worth keeping an eye on for the second half.
The San Francisco Giants may be sellers as we approach the trade deadline but that shouldn’t take away from the value of their starting pitcher Andrew Suarez. He’s been on a roll in his last few starts and should be someone worth keeping an eye on coming out of the second half of your Fantasy Baseball season.
Suarez has three straight quality starts coming against top offenses like the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks. In those three starts, Suarez combined for 19.0 innings pitched, a 1.42 ERA, 1.105 WHIP, 16 strikeouts and six walks. The success goes back even further if you count the start before that.
He has a 1.46 ERA with a 20:7 K:BB ratio in that span. Though, he doesn’t pitch deep into games. Over his last four starts, Suarez averages just over six innings per start.

It doesn’t help that he doesn’t throw many strikes. In his last start, only 58 of his 103 pitches were strikes. Two starts ago, he threw 68 of 101 pitches for strikeouts. That is long enough to qualify for a win and quality start, though.
The Giants rookie has only three wins this season but that blame should be targeted to the offense. A pitcher can’t win if the team doesn’t put up runs.
Suarez has been successful more at home than on the road. He has a 2.91 ERA in San Francisco compared to a 4.65 ERA away from AT&T Park.
However, two of his last three starts came on the road. With the weather heating up, so has Suarez. He posted an ERA of 5.46 in May, 2.62 in June and 1.38 in July.
Suarez has also induced more ground balls and fewer fly balls in June and July, which resulted in the four straight successful starts for the 25-year-old.
While it’s not listed, Suarez will likely make his next start on July 15 against the Oakland Athletics. The A’s have the ability to put up some runs but the can also strike out a lot. They have the 12th-most strikeouts in the league this season.

Suarez’s recent success has garnered him some fans. He’s been added in 7.9 percent of ESPN leagues over the last week. He’s still available in 86 percent of leagues. A good track record, good matchup and numbers trending in the right direction make him a worthy pickup for the second half.
