San Diego Padres – Tyson Ross, Starting Pitcher

The fact that Tyson Ross is even pitching is quite an achievement in and of itself. He came back from cardio thoracic outlet syndrome, which was a serious health issue that threatened his career. The stats have taken a tumble recently but Ross has been a pretty effective pitcher this season and has always generated a lot of ground balls. In addition, he’s a 31-year old who will be a free agent next season and the Padres should get what they can for him now.

Since it should be a fairly low acquisition cost, the Yankees should certainly be interested in taking a chance on Ross who has actually been a good deal better than his 4.41 ERA would suggest. His last two starts have gone very poorly as he’s given up seven and eight earned runs. In his other 16 starts this season, Ross had given up more than three earned runs just twice. Let’s face it, even if Ross isn’t a dynamo, can he be that much worse than Sonny Gray has been for the Yankees this season?

New York is in prime position to win a World Series this year. A pitcher like Tyson Ross might not be the reason they would win the whole thing, but he could be a very important cog down the stretch. What he does well gives him a chance for success even in a harsh pitching environment and he would be a great no risk, all reward gamble for the Bombers in the coming weeks.
