Fantasy CPR Fantasy Football Mailbag #1 – Week of July 9th

Hold on just a few more weeks…. we’re nearly to the promise land. Fantasy football draft season is heating up and we’ve begun to comb through the ADP to find the hidden gems. This is also the time of year people start organizing leagues and selecting their keepers. It’s a fantastic time to get into fantasy football if you haven’t already, and it’s like Christmas for those of us who obsess over it.

In honor of the approaching holiday, we’re doing a mailbag series with our Twitter followers to help you make the tough decisions. If you’d like a question answered, follow us at @FantasyCPR and @RobNeedsCPR, and respond to my weekly mailbag tweet. I’ll pick the best ones and get them answered for you right here on the site. Let’s get to it!

Question 1: “Keeper league, .5 PPR. Can keep two. I have OBJ, David Johnson, Shady, and Fournette. Standard roster with two RB, three WR, and Flex.”

– Mike (@MikeMarteny)

You’re basically picking two of three. Shady has too much surrounding him off the field right now to take that risk when you have great options elsewhere. I’d lean DJ and Fournette. Most owners with keeper decisions will keep their running backs since they’re at such a premium. Having a stud ball carrier is crucial in 2018, and they will go off the board quickly.

This means there’s likely a lot of receiver depth in the middle rounds that could makeup for throwing OBJ back into the pool. Starting a roster with two top 8 backs is a phenomenal way to structure your team. Go WR heavy right away and look for bounce-back guys like Amari Cooper and Doug Baldwin that can give you WR1 production. Guess right on just one of them and you have yourself a juggernaut.

Question 2: “I have Dak as a round 13 keeper this year. Thoughts on him this season? Other late-round QBs you suggest as a second option?”

– Geoff (@SavesTheClash)

To be honest, I wouldn’t suggest keeping a Quarterback at all. There’s way too much value to be retained elsewhere that can’t be easily replaced. The Quarterback landscape is the deepest it’s ever been, and this year is no different. You can get someone in the 12th/13th round that will give you production close to Dak’s, and you can still keep a position player that provides you with a genuine advantage.

In terms of Prescott, he definitely produces at a much higher rate with Zeke in the lineup. Last season he was pacing as the QB3 when they were both on the field. Without him, he was pacing in the bottom third of the league. I understand the intrigue. With that being said, the weapons around him are just…. ugly. Hurns and Gallup are the top options in the passing game, which doesn’t strike fear into anyone. I think Dallas rides Zeke to nearly 400 carries. Dak has a chance to be efficient, but won’t get enough opportunity to set many stat sheets on fire.

If you’re going QB late, I absolutely love Alex Smith. In 2017 he ranked at the top of the league in adjusted yards per attempt, second overall in completion percentage, and first overall in true passer rating. Yet somehow he’s going as the QB22. He still has solid weapons around him, and he uses his legs more than people realize. He was 6th overall in rushing yards in the NFL last season. Smith is being completely ignored, yet he could easily finish as a QB1.

Question 3: “Considering Dion Lewis injury history, would David Fluellen be worth drafting in a BestBall 12 team 18 rounder?”

– Rich @HallumRich

Rich, thanks for the question. The short answer here is no, but it presents a unique concept that is thrown around in best ball. If you aren’t familiar with best ball formats, there’s no waivers or trading. If you lose a starting RB, that’s it. No replacements, no real options. It also means if you want a lottery ticket backup, you have to draft them and leave them on your roster.

Although I understand the idea, value wise it’s not worth it. There’s a more than likely chance Fluellen never touches the field. In a best ball format, there’s still plenty of boom/bust guys you can target late. Take one of them instead. Might I suggest Paul Richardson? Or Kenny Stills?

Even if an injury were to happen, he’s not the ideal handcuff. In this scenario, Derrick Henry would see the biggest boost. Predicting injuries is never a good strategy, but if you think Lewis is fragile, then reach for Henry.
