The Open 2018 leaderboard: Who is leading after Round 1?
By Kyle Walton
The opening round of the 147th Open Championship is officially in the books. Take a look at who leads, who is still in contention and who has some ground to make up heading into Friday.
Visions of lifting the famed Claret Jug danced in the back of every contender’s mind as they stepped onto the first tee Thursday at Carnoustie. As the 147th playing of The Open Championship began, golf’s elite competitors from around the world treacherously navigated the quick fairways and challenging greens. With the first 18 holes of this year’s tournament wrapped up, some surprising names are within striking distance of leader Kevin Kisner while other fan favorites and veterans will struggle just to make the cut come Friday.
In the favorable morning wave Kisner set the pace early on. The South Carolina native’s first mark on the scorecard was an unfortunate bogey on the par-4 5th hole. Following his lone blemish Kisner answered right back with an eagle on six and four more birdies before closing out the opening round with a 5-under 66.

South Africa’s Erik Van Rooyen and Zander Lombard join rising star Tony Finau in a tie for second at 4-under. Big names including Rory McIlroy (-2), Justin Thomas (-2) and Rickie Fowler (-1) all remain within striking distance. All eyes inside Carnoustie were keeping close tabs on none other than Tiger Woods who after an opening birdie had to settle in and battle back to finish at even par.

Most notably in trouble of missing the cut are reigning world number one Dustin Johnson (+5) and 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed (+4). Only 70 players including ties will make the cut come Friday evening. With potential for rain and increased winds early on during the second round it’s still anyone’s guess who will be leading and who will be packing their bags come the weekend.
