This article looks at some starting pitchers for Sunday, July 22nd that you should consider for your Fantasy Baseball lineup.

Marco Gonzales– Seattle Mariners

Opponent: vs. Chicago White Sox

With James Paxton going on the DL, Marco Gonzales’ importance has grown significantly for the Mariners. His value has also been noticed among Fantasy Baseball users, as he is now 72.2% owned in ESPN leagues and 72% in Yahoo Leagues. Gonzales leads the team in wins with 10, and has a 3.41 ERA going into Sunday’s matchup with the White Sox. After a tough June in which he had a 4.02 ERA over six starts, Gonzales has had two solid starts in July. He only gave up one run over those two starts, struck out 11, and only walked two batters. Overall, he has only walked 22 hitters in 19 starts this season, and he’s held opponents to a .387 slugging %.

The White Sox should be a great matchup for Gonzales. They score the fifth fewest runs and strike out the third most in all of baseball. Gonzales also had a great outing against them earlier in the year, in which he gave up no runs and struck out eight over six innings. Here are some of the highlights:

J.A. Happ– Toronto Blue Jays

Opponent: vs. Baltimore

After having a pretty solid June, in which he went 3-0 with a 3.16 ERA and 27 strikeouts, J.A. Happ has really struggled in July. He has lost all three of his starts and posted a 9.75 ERA. However, I think he’s due for a bounce-back outing, and he has the perfect matchup to do so.

The Baltimore Orioles were already one of the worst run-scoring teams in the league with superstar Manny Machado in the lineup. Now that Manny has been traded to the Dodgers, the Orioles offense revolves around veteran Adam Jones, who has had a decent season, but only has ten homers and is hitting .277, the highest on the team. The Orioles’ anemic offense should provide Happ an excellent opportunity to get back in the win column and put up some solid numbers.

There have been many rumors suggesting Happ will be traded near or at the deadline. The Blue Jays don’t seem to be contenders this season, so Happ can also use this start to showcase to teams that he can help them not only for the rest of the season, but in October as well.

Matt Harvey– Cincinnati Reds

Opponent: vs. Pittsburgh

What a year it’s been for Matt Harvey. At the time he was traded from the Mets to the Reds, Harvey had a 0-2 record with a 7.00 ERA. He goes into Sunday’s start with a 4.63 ERA.

New York can be a really tough market for some players to play in, and that was clearly the case for Matt Harvey. While he hasn’t returned to his 2015 self, Harvey has had a nice turnaround with the Reds. He has gone 5-3 with a 3.64 ERA over 12 starts. Over his last five starts, Harvey has gone 4-0 and has not given up more than 2 earned runs in any of those outings. In addition, those starts came against playoff contending teams, including the Cubs, Braves, Brewers, and Cardinals.

Like Happ, Harvey has been the subject of trade talks as of late. He is a free agent at the end of the season, so he would likely only draw interest from playoff-contending teams as a rental. Perhaps tomorrow’s start against the Pirates will be an audition for other GMs around the league as the trade deadline approaches.
