MLB DFS Picks – Standouts: July 23rd
Tonight’s MLB DFS Picks slate features 13 games with, Cleveland (5.5), Texas (5.4), Oakland (5.3), Los Angeles (5.3), and Boston (5.2), holding the best projected team totals. With high-priced pitchers like, Luis Severino, Corey Kluber, and Jacob deGrom available, finding value will be critical for success tonight. We’ll be aiming to highlight MLB DFS picks from the perspective of batted ball data, batter splits, line movement, and stolen base upside.
MLB DFS Picks: Batted Ball Stats
Yan Gomes – DK $3700, FD $2500
While he’s not the most attractive option given his spot in the lineup, Yan Gomes is an interesting play given his recent batted ball stats. In last 15 days, his batted ball distance is up 28 feet, his exit velocity is up 4 MPH, and his hard hit percentage is up 14%, over his yearly average. Gomes will be in play on both sites, but is much cheaper on FanDuel, at $2500.
Batter Splits
Lorenzo Cain – DK $4600, FD $3400
Lorenzo Cain will draw an advantageous matchup as he faces the lefty, Gio Gonzalez. Cain is much better against left-handed pitching, with a .496 wOBA split (.159 better than when facing a righty) and a .273 ISO split (.175 better than when facing a righty). Cain also provides stolen base upside, as he has stolen 18 bases this year, 10th most in the majors.
Kole Calhoun – DK $3600, FD $2500
Kole Calhoun had a big day yesterday, and will look to continue his recent success, tonight. Calhoun will draw an attractive matchup against the righty, Lucas Giolito. Calhoun is much better against right-handed pitchers, with a .303 wOBA split (.058 better than when facing a lefty) and a .179 ISO split (.121 better than when facing a lefty).
Line Movement
Cleveland Batters
Cleveland will play host to the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates tonight, in a game in which Cleveland opened as -255 favorites. Since opening, the line has moved even further towards Cleveland and they now sit around, -275. In addition to the movement on the side, the total has also seen some movement. The game total opened at 8 runs, but has since moved up a half of a run, to 8.5. The action on the total has been different across the market, so it will be important to monitor this later today.
Cleveland will face the righty, Trevor Williams tonight. While his last start looked good on paper (5 innings pitched, zero earned runs), the batted ball stats tell a different story. While it’s only a sample of one game, his opposing batted ball distance was up 46 feet, his exit velocity was up 6 MPH, and his hard hit percentage was up 27%, over his yearly average.
Stolen Base Upside
LAA Runners
LAA batters will have one of the most advantageous matchups on the base paths tonight, as they face the righty, Lucas Giolito. Giolito has surrendered 17 stolen bases, over the course of 103.1 innings this year, the second most in the majors. This should be a huge boost for base runners like, Mike Trout, Ian Kinsler, and Andrelton Simmons.
