Did the Yankees just take a shot at Gary Sanchez on Twitter?

After Gary Sanchez made a pair of lackadaisical mistakes Monday night, it appears the Yankees might have taken a shot at him.

By now, you’ve surely seen – or heard – about what New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez did Monday night. It’s all over social media and the major sports networks.

In a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Sanchez made two head-scratching plays that potentially cost his team the game. In the first inning, he loafed after a passed ball, allowing a runner to score from second base.

Then, with the bases loaded and two outs in a one-run game in the ninth inning, Sanchez didn’t run out a ground ball that he likely could have beat out had he hustled down the line. Sanchez was the second runner the Rays tried to retire on the play.

Tuesday morning, the Yankees official twitter account sent out the following tweet.

Interesting.

The timing is certainly suspect, but it’s not totally a shot at Sanchez. Less than 12 hours after Sanchez’ lack of said hustle gets him ripped by both New York and national media, the team nominates his backup for a hustle award. If the Yankees’ social media team was trying to take a stab at the young catcher, it certainly didn’t do a good job of hiding it.

For further clarification, the award that Austin Romine is being nominated for is the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Heart & Hustle award. Each team nominates a player who “demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit and traditions of the game.”

Backup catchers don’t typically receive nearly enough spotlight or attention to be nominated for such an award. And if Romine truly did deserve the honor, it’s incredibly unlikely that the timing of the announcement didn’t have anything to do with Sanchez’s debacle last night.

Maybe the social media team in New York just has really, really bad situational awareness. But more likely, it just joined the growing list of Gary Sanchez critics.
