Signing Dez Bryant would be risky but rewarding move for Browns

The Cleveland Browns are considering a move for free agent wide receiver Dez Bryant. Is it the right one?

We now live in a world where the Cleveland Browns may no longer be the laughingstock of the NFL. Yes, you read that correctly. The Browns have spent the offseason putting together an improved squad and are now looking to get even better. According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland has discussed bringing in wide receiver Dez Bryant. General manager John Dorsey confirmed the Browns’ are interest in Bryant.

Bryant has been a free agent ever since being cut by the Dallas Cowboys following last season. The Cowboys cut the receiver as his contract didn’t favor the team and Bryant was unwilling to negotiate. In addition, the team was looking to move in another direction. Although several teams have shown interest in the former Dallas receiver, nobody has offered the 29-year-old a deal he would even consider. However, that may change with the Browns’ reported interest.

Sure, we can all have a laugh about the possibility of Bryant, Baker Mayfield, Josh Gordon and Jarvis Landry sharing a locker room. But, on a more serious note, the addition of Bryant would improve the Browns significantly. There’s no denying his on-field production has gradually declined over the course of the last three years. However, his experience in the league and knowledge of the game would do a lot to help out young receivers like Jarvis Landry and Corey Coleman.

On another note, while it’s unlikely Mayfield gets the starting nod over Tyrod Taylor, Bryant can be a mentor for Mayfield and contribute to his development as a young quarterback.

There’s no denying it’s a risky move to bring in Bryant. But it could be the sort of thing that ends up paying off. Besides, what does a team who went 0-16 last season have to lose? Cleveland has made some tremendous moves this offseason; the addition of Bryant could be another.
