Kevin Durant going to the Los Angeles Lakers would be really, really fun. Just saying.
Listen up, fellow aggregators: THIS IS NOT A REPORT NOR A RUMOR. Nobody, possibly even the man himself, knows exactly what Kevin Durant plans to do next summer. This is just a thought.
That being said, imagine if KD turned down his player option a year from now and suddenly signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. Instantly, the Pacific Division would be home to one of the best rivalries ever–LeBron James and KD against the spurned Golden State Warriors.
I don’t see a single downside to this move, aside from insufferable Lakers fans having another real thing to celebrate. The upside makes that steep price worthwhile.
Most importantly, the NBA would no longer be decided before the season even starts anymore. The Warriors might not even be favorites anymore! Finally, the tired talking point of the parity problem would be over and done with.
Golden State would suddenly be a whole lot of fun to watch again. The Warriors’ game with KD is more ‘we’re better than you and thus we win’ than ‘let’s let Stephen Curry do crazy stuff but also share the ball and inexplicably rely on our 10th man in clutch time’, which is sad. (Okay, maybe that last one still happens.) The old Warriors were more fun. Let’s bring them back.
LeBron, who is the butt of a lot of jokes currently for going to a team without another star player, would have a chance to compete for a title again. The Association is better with LeBron on a contender.
Also, hopefully the community of people who feel the need to call KD a snake (and plenty of worse things) online would quiet down now that he’s un-ruined the NBA. He might be weird, but Durant is an all-time great without a doubt. He deserves some respect.
Let’s make this happen, Adam Silver. The NBA is already insanely entertaining, but the KD and LeBron vs Steph, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green Warriors would take the cake. I don’t just want this, I need it.
