4. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers did not bring Derek Anderson back as Cam Newton’s backup this offseason. That leaves them with Garrett Gilbert and Taylor Heinicke, and their combined total of one regular season pass attempt on the depth chart behind him. Newton is not necessarily a huge durability concern, but he is in harm’s way more often as a running quarterback and any sort of absence would take the season off the rails for Carolina.

Norv Turner’s offense was not a great fit for Bridgewater does best in Minnesota. But the two were together as starting quarterback and offensive coordinator for most of two seasons and deep into a third offseason, and that familiarity should help Bridgewater hit the ground running in Carolina.

This side of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, no quarterback is as important to his team as Newton is to the Panthers. Bridgewater is obviously not an exact replica of Newton’s skill set, but no one really is. If he’s healthy, Bridgewater’s starting experience automatically makes him an upgrade over the current backup situation for the Panthers.
