1. Jordan Zimmermann

The Tigers haven’t publicly made the decision to be sellers yet, but given the fact that they’re 13 games back in the division it’s clear what they should do. Unloading Zimmerman’s hefty salary should be something the Detroit front office strongly considers this month.

Zimmermann’s contract still has $50 million left to pay after this season. There are only a few teams that have the financial wherewithal to take on even a large portion of that salary. Of course, the Yankees are one of those teams.

The 32-year-old righty has bounced back from a nightmare campaign in 2017 to be one of the team’s best pitchers this season. His ERA of 3.97 in 68 innings pitched this year gives a taste of what he might be able to do in the second half if he can remain healthy. Zimmermann might have one of the highest upsides of any pitcher who may become available.

The price to acquire Zimmermann will be directly related to how much salary the Yankees might be willing to take on. The most likely outcome would be Cashman agreeing to take on half the remaining dollars if he can get away with providing the Tigers a mid-tier prospect in return. That’s a risky deal for the Yankees, but it’s the sort of move that could really pay off in October. Zimmermann has the talent to be a difference maker down the stretch.
