Nick Saban agrees to contract extension with Alabama, meaning he’ll be with the Crimson Tide through the next seven seasons.

Things are relatively quiet on the college scene as the season inches closer. However, the college football world received some big news on Friday. While the news may bring a smile to many at the University of Alabama, the rest of the NCAA won’t be too thrilled. Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide reached an extension on Friday that will see Saban remain head coach through the 2025 season.

Saban tacked on one season to his current contract. The 66-year-old now has eight years remaining on his deal after the extension. Barring anymore extensions, Saban is set to lead the Crimson Tide program through February of 2026. Included in his extension were a series of bonuses and raises. He is now set to make $8.3 million in 2018, according to reports.

The Alabama head coach has been with the program since 2007. There, he’s won five national titles in the last seven years and overall. Saban’s posted a stellar 127-20 record and won the SEC five times. He’ll get a chance to add to that legacy over the course of the next eight seasons. There were many questions surrounding when he’d retire — as he’s now 66 — but this should put an end to those questions.

Not only is Saban widely regarded as the best coach of this generation, he’s often referred to as one of the greatest college coaches of all time. Although the legacy’s left behind by Joe Paterno and Bear Bryant are hard to surpass, if Saban stays the course, he may just leave the game as the best to ever do it. There’s no telling what the future holds for the University of Alabama — although likely much of the same — but one thing is certain, Saban will continue to punish foes for years to come.
