2. Wild Wing

It’s almost so bad that it’s good.

As a part of an NHL alternate jersey experiment in the mid-1990s the Ducks were one of a handful of teams to wear very unique jersey designs. For Anaheim, the team’s first ever alternate jersey focused on the team’s mascot, Wild Wing.

The league will more than likely never see a design such as this one again, but given how uncommon and risky the overall appearance was this sweater is the second best third jersey in Ducks’ history.

First and foremost, Anaheim made the right decision by using the primary base-color as Jade and the white shoulder yokes that also entailed thin purple stripes really complemented this jersey. The team was right by incorporating and staying consistent, by adding the classic Mighty Ducks’ diagonal stripes on the jersey’s sleeves and the eggplant-purple looked terrific with the Jade.

Yes, the font used for players’ numbers and last names is odd, but for the ‘90s it could have been worse. Now, the crest is totally against the grain.

Having Wild Wing jumping out and breaking through a sheet of ice was creative, yet also questionable to have on an ice hockey jersey. Still, the sweater is so unique and arguably innovative that it belongs this high up on the list.

One could also argue that a team such as the Ducks should go against the grain when it comes to jersey designs, considering how young of a franchise that they were and are — instead of “trying” to be like other NHL clubs.

If the Ducks made one, or two, minor adjustments to this sweater prior to wearing them, then perhaps the Wild Wing alternate jersey wouldn’t have been retired after just a few appearances in 1995-96.
