The Indians have contacted the Nationals to check in on the availability of superstar outfielder Bryce Harper as the trade deadline nears.

While it seems the Cleveland Indians have found themselves lost in the shuffle of the crazy American League at times, they’re not satisfied with just another playoff appearance. While contenders like the Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are making moves, the Indians are making inquiries ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. Recently, reports have surfaced about Cleveland making contact with the Nationals about a possible Bryce Harper trade.

While the sheer mention of these talks is enough to get any fan base on the edge of their seat. However, the talks seem to be going nowhere at the moment between the Indians and Nationals. The asking price will surely be high, which may be why the Indians are resilient to pursue a deal. On the other hand, Washington needs to find an identity quick.

The Nationals sit six games back in the NL East and the same margin back from a Wild Card spot. The postseason isn’t out of their grasp, but they have to pick up the pace in order to close the gap. With one day left, the Nationals need to find out whether they’ll buy in to a rebuild, stay put or add some pieces and try to contend.

Despite Harper having a down year average wise (.220), Harper is still hitting the cover off the ball with 25 home runs to date. Further, the reigning Home Run Derby champion is one of the most talented young players in the league. The 25-year-old has made quite the name for himself in Washington as he’s not arguably the most recognizable face in the game.

A lot of contenders have checked in on his availability, but it’s hard to see the Nats dealing Harper this season. If the Nationals continue to have issues within the clubhouse and the team falls apart, don’t be surprised to see Harper sporting another team’s uniform on Opening Day next season though.
