CommishRx Fantasy Advice: “It’s My First Draft Party!”

"I’ve decided that I want to hold our very first draft party. Most of us live in the same city, work together, etc. We do a live online draft every year. I know guys in leagues who go all out renting dining halls or going to places like Dave & Buster’s. They’ll have the big draft boards and a podium. I don’t want to go that big. Honestly I can’t really afford it and I don’t want to ask others to pitch in a bunch of money. I just think after eight seasons it’d be fun for us to do it together at least once. Ideas?"

I’ve heard of some really involved and insane parties too. I know some guys who fly to Vegas for their draft party each year. However, if you’re not a high roller then don’t act like one. This is something you want to do. You didn’t say anyone was asking you to do it.

So, keep it simple. You don’t have to perform to anyone else’s expectations except your own.

Your very first draft party can be a quiet get-together at your place. If you don’t have the space, hopefully someone in your league will. Your living room or someone’s backyard isn’t Dave and Buster’s, but it doesn’t have to be.

You simply want to do something fun for the members of your league. See how many of them agree with you. You might find that not everyone wants to do it, and that’s okay. That means that space will be less of an issue.

I myself, am not a draft party type of guy. If I was at your party, I wouldn’t speak to any of you. I’d be focusing on the draft. I wouldn’t want anyone else around. I don’t like to hear a bunch of yelling and laughing. I like it quiet while I keep notes and announce my next moves out loud. Fun, huh?

Folks can bring their own food and booze. This will save you money and you won’t have to worry about dietary restrictions or food allergies.

Everyone will draft on their own device. You don’t need a LCD projector playing Super Bowl highlights on the wall. And, forget about the draft board and hiring Michael Buffer to announce each draft pick (I’m pretty sure someone has hired him to do just that).

If everyone has a good time, maybe you can spend the offseason planning the next one together. Who knows? It may grow into a bigger and crazier draft party each year. Or, perhaps it may remain a low-key, low-cost affair, but still a fun time for your league, and that’s what matters. Have fun!
