4. There’s help in the minors

Chance Adams might not be the highest-rated Yankees prospect, but he’s getting a huge opportunity against the Red Sox today. Fortunately for the organization, there are other players in the system who can help the team when September rolls around.

The obvious name on the lips of the collective Yankees fan base is Justus Sheffield. It’s very possible that if the Scranton rotation were set up differently, he’d be getting the call to pitch in Fenway. Sheffield has certainly had a better season in AAA than Adams.

Brian Cashman and company might elect to let him work on his game in the minors for a few more weeks, but it’s almost certain he’ll get some time in the Bronx before the year is over. Even if he only comes up when the rosters expand, he could give Aaron Boone an interesting weapon to deploy down the stretch.

If you’re looking for a hitter who can come up and help the big club your hopes are probably resting on Luke Voit. He got called up to be on the bench against the Red Sox too. He isn’t a tremendously talented prospect, but the Yankees acquired him for a reason. At the very least, they believe he is a better player than Tyler Austin. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him have a hot week or two with the bat down the stretch.
