Yankees fans shouldn’t give up on this team just yet

2. Luis Severino will pitch like an ace again

Severino has been a mess for the Yankees lately, but he showed signs of life in the loss to the Red Sox last night. He had an ugly first inning where he gave up three runs, but he managed to grind out a pretty decent start after the nightmare first frame. He wasn’t vintage Severino by any means, but he was much closer than he’s been since the All-Star break.

An ERA of 5.35 in his last seven starts is certainly not what this team needs from their most talented starting pitcher. This team isn’t going anywhere if Severino can’t pitch like an ace down the stretch.

Fortunately, the odds favor him returning to his top form sooner, rather than later. Severino is simply too talented to be a below-average pitcher for very long. It may take some long hours with Larry Rothschild, but there’s nothing about his struggles that don’t appear fixable. After all, his velocity has not suffered any type of significant decrease.

It may take a few more weeks, but Severino is going to find another groove before the season is over. Once he does, he’ll mow through Yankees opposition just like he did during the first half of the year. A hot ace at the top of Boone’s rotation could really turn things around for this team.
