Chargers fans face nervous wait on Joey Bosa injury
When healthy, the Chargers have one of the best pass rushing tandems in the NFL. Unfortunately, an injury to Joey Bosa may cost Los Angeles.
At some point, Chargers fans need to face the reality that their favorite team may be cursed. Today’s injury to Joey Bosa could end up being the team’s third significant injury before their first preseason game is played. The team faces a nervous wait about the defensive end’s foot.
Reports from ESPN claim Bosa “hobbled off the field” during 11-on-11 drills in Costa Mesa on Tuesday. He spent the rest of practice on the sidelines with trainers. The good news for Chargers fans is that he was not immediately taken to the hospital for any sort of further examination.
Even so, you can’t blame Chargers fans for thinking the worst. They’ve already seen tight end Hunter Henry lost for the season before preseason began. Then, cornerback Jason Verrett tore his Achilles during a conditioning test. No other team in the NFL has had worse luck than Los Angeles to date.
Bosa’s importance to the team really can’t be overstated. He is one of the best pass rushers in the league from the defensive end position. The former Ohio State star has racked up 23 sacks in just 28 games as a professional. Last season, he was able to play a full 16-game slate for the Chargers and he reached the Pro Bowl after getting to the quarterback 12.5 times.
The season-ending injury to Verrett will place even more pressure on Bosa and Melvin Ingram to torment the quarterback from their defensive end positions. Losing Bosa would allow offenses to double team Ingram on a regular basis. That would go a long way towards neutralizing his ability to wreak havoc in the offensive backfield.
Chargers fans and coaches will be waiting on pins and needles to discover the extent of Bosa’s injury. They will sincerely hope it’s not their third major injury of the preseason.
