Nashville Predators: Magnus Hellberg

At some point there was no doubt we were getting to a guy named Magnus on this list. You simply don’t go through a professional hockey career with that name and never consider yourself noticed.

But this isn’t only a first name. That last name has us conjuring images of some long forgotten warrior as well. Like people used to carve this guy’s name into the sides of mountains and cave dwellings.

Vikings would utter him as a God before conquering war-infested territories and whatever else it is that Vikings did back then. Pillage, plunder and eat salty drumsticks probably.

The fact that he only played in four (!) NHL games over an eight-year career speaks volumes to the power of his handle. We weren’t going to miss out.

Here is Magnus in action, a goalie clearly stuck out of time and just trying to find his way back to the 10th century. Or he could be really enjoying himself here, who knows. He still plays as well, having recently finished a stint over in Russia with the Kunlun Red Star. Because when you’re a Nordic seafarer, the only way to go is to travel around the world pillaging for saves and a good goals against average. Am I right?

Here’s a question I think we’d all like to have answered at some point: Why do the Swedes always have the most awesome names? Is there a book or something on this?

Honorable mentions: Sheldon Brookbank, Martin Erat, Michael del Zotto, Simon Gamache, Jordin Tootoo, David Legwand, Juuse Saros and Marek Zidlicky
