Chase Elliott has finally broken through, but does he have an encore up his sleeve? Will another driver get their first 2018 victory, or can the Big 3 restore dominance at Michigan International Speedway? Those will be the primary storylines for Sunday’s Consumers Energy 400.
Once again, Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas sit on Row 1. Denny Hamlin prevailed by the slimmest of margins over teammate Kyle Busch to win his second straight Busch Pole Award, but he’s undoubtedly more concerned about finishing strong than starting up front. Hamlin is still winless on the season, while Busch (starting second), Kevin Harvick (third) and Martin Truex Jr. (seventh) are anything but and looking to strike again.
And what about Kyle Larson? It’s been a tough year for the Chip Ganassi Racing driver after multiple wins in 2017, and he used to own Michigan. If he and the 42 team can find their form in the Irish Hills again, it would go a long way to restoring their confidence and swagger.
