While Mason Fine may be the smallest quarterback in the FBS, he certainly makes up for his lack of stature with how hard he plays the game. Fine is one of the toughest players in college football, and plays the game well above his 5-foot-11 frame, and has put up eye-popping numbers through his first two years on campus.
After a freshman season that saw him throw for six touchdowns and nearly 1,600 yards, Fine really became a superstar in 2017. The sophomore threw for over 4,000 yards in his 14 starts, connecting on 31 touchdowns while setting a ton of North Texas records along the way.
In total, Fine set the school single-season records for completions (324), attempts (511), yards (4,052), and touchdown passes (31). For his efforts, he was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, and heading into his second full season as the starter, he may even improve off of his own records.
During his high school career, Fine became the most prolific passer in Oklahoma history, throwing for over 13,000 yards and 166 touchdowns. In his senior campaign, he racked up 53 touchdown passes alone, though due to his size, he was not highly recruited. After the 2017 season, he has firmly put himself on the map.
Fine capped off his magical sophomore season by putting up record numbers in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, setting a school record for yards (303) and tying one for touchdowns (3). In all, Fine is going to be one of the more exciting quarterbacks to watch next season, as North Texas continues to improve as a program with him under center.
