The Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots are set for a Super Bowl rematch at Gillette Stadium, with the teams squaring off in preseason action.

If the Patriots win this game, all can be forgotten from the nightmare in February. We kid, of course, but New England will look to beat Philadelphia on Thursday night, albeit with a bunch of backups playing a large majority of the game.

For Philadelphia, the goal is to simply avoid any more injuries. Carson Wentz isn’t playing as he continues to come back from the torn ACL that derailed his season last December, while wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is also resting, hoping to avoid a regular-season stint on the Physically Unable to Perform List.

New England is gunning for another AFC East title, something it has secured every season since 2001, save for two occasions. The Patriots appear to be loaded for bear once more, although there are real questions about the defense, the same unit that Philadelphia didn’t punt once against in the Super Bowl six months ago.

Both teams come into the season to repeat in their respective conferences, although no team has been able to win the Super Bowl in consecutive seasons since the Patriots did it in 2003-04. Oddly enough, New England did so against the Eagles that year, defeating Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb down in Jacksonville.

Look for both teams to play their starters for the first quarter and perhaps into the second before yanking them in lieu of some younger kids getting a look.
