The New York Jets and Washington Redskins will clash in the nation’s capital on Thursday night, with the headliner being one rookie quarterback.
After dazzling inches first preseason action against the Atlanta Falcons, rookie quarterback Sam Darnold takes his show on the road. The New York Jets are visiting the Washington Redskins and their new quarterback, Alex Smith, freshly-signed to a four-year deal worth $94 million.
Darnold, though, is the main draw for anybody not particularly interested in the Redskins. The Jets have long been without any hope under center, and suddenly find themselves with a pair of intriguing options in Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater, 25, signed a one-year deal to prove his worth and looked fantastic against the Falcons. If he continues to play that way, New York will likely look to deal him before the regular season starts, adding to its draft capital moving forward.
As for the Redskins, they simply want to stay healthy. Last week, the team lost second-round pick, running back Derrius Guice to a torn ACL, putting him on the shelf for the entire season. Washington will likely only play most of its starters through the first quarter and perhaps into the early stages of the second quarter.
