Notre Dame unveils Yankees-inspired uniforms for Shamrock Series game
In anticipation of their game against Syracuse at Yankee Stadium in November, Notre Dame has unveiled a special uniform.
Since 2010, perhaps as a sign of the over saturation of college football bowl games, Yankee Stadium has been transformed into a football stadium for the Pinstripe Bowl. Now Notre Dame is taking its annual Shamrock Series game to the Bronx this season, Nov. 17 against Syracuse. With the Orange coming back on their schedule this year, the close geographic tie was an easy opportunity to play a game at Yankee Stadium for Notre Dame.
As is custom with these type of games in college football, the Fighting Irish will wear special uniforms for that contest against the Orange.
On Thursday they were revealed, in concert with Under Armour, and they are a clear, obvious nod to the primary tenants of Yankee Stadium. For better or worse, as two of the most iconic (and broadly hated) brands in sports come together.
The classic New York Yankees pinstripes are on the sleeves and pants, and also on the helmet decal. The navy blue color scheme is nice, but it’s also a clearly the Yankees’ color. The “Notre Dame” inscription on the chest is even in the Yankees cursive font.
Here’s a closer look.
Easily the best part of the whole works is the helmet, with a matte navy finish and the classic Notre Dame “ND” monogram over the classic pinstripes on the decal. Yankees fans might love the jersey, apart from any Notre Dame crossover fandom, but they are pretty much an assault on the corneas otherwise. And the pants seem sure to look like the an exact replica of the baseball pants the Yankees wear, with full pinstripes.
It’s not known if Syracuse will be unveiling their own special uniform for the Nov. 17 game. But if they are considering such a thing they might do well to keep it simple, with a chrome orange helmet or something.
