The London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal is never a dull event, and it is almost always a heated affair. Vying for supremacy in the capital, the Blues and the Gunners square off on August 18 in the match of the week for the second matchday of the 2018-2019 Premier League season.

Both clubs feature new managers, but their fortunes have diverged at the start of the new campaign. Chelsea crushed overmatched Huddersfield 3-0 on the road to open the season. Under Maurizio Sarri, the former Napoli manager, Chelsea played a clinical 4-3-3 with Álvaro Morata up top flanked by Willian (and later Eden Hazard) on the left and Pedro on the right.

They are still adjusting to the new management, but already Chelsea looks like a contender for the Premier League this year. Currently sitting second behind Liverpool on goal differential, this is a match where the Blues will just hope to nab three points.

Arsenal, on the other hand, almost needs to secure victory if they hope to have any shot of playing for a top-four spot in the Premier League this year. The Gunners drew a tough schedule to start the season, as they fell 2-0 at home to defending Premier League champion Manchester City last week and now have to travel to Stamford Bridge.

Former PSG manager Unai Emery still has work to do to transform Arsenal back into a contender in an increasingly competitive Premier League. Especially on the back end, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal can contain a clinical Chelsea attack on August 18.

Last year these two clubs drew both of their matches in the season series. In the past two years, Arsenal has taken down Chelsea in the FA Cup, Community Shield, and League Cup. Will it be another draw, or can one of the sides prevail this year?

Chelsea got the chance to ease into the season, with a manageable opponent and the opportunity to adjust to their new manager. Arsenal didn’t get that luxury, and as a result they look far more frantic heading into this clash.

That should pay off for Chelsea, which looks ready to put on a serious push for another Premier League title. Sarri inherited the club that was better positioned for an immediate turnaround. When they meet again in January, things might have equalized. Now, though, this will probably end up a tight 1-0 or 2-0 victory for the Blues at home.
