8. Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles

Wentz was on his way to an MVP caliber season in 2017 before a torn ACL brought his campaign to a premature close. The good news is that his recovery seems to be ahead of schedule. That should allow Wentz to be ready to go for the Eagles on Week 1.

That’s bad news for the rest of the NFL. His combination of arm strength, mobility and football intelligence make him a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators. Throwing for 33 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in your second season as a starter is an excellent start to anyone’s career.

The only thing keeping Wentz out of the top five are questions about his durability. He’s got excellent mobility, but his size makes him a big target for opposing defenders. Wentz took far too many hits last season. He simply has to get smarter when he’s running the football.

If he can do that, the sky is the limit for Wentz and this Eagles offense. When he stands in the pocket and fires the football down the field there’s little anyone can do to stop him. Doug Pederson and the coaching staff just need to convince him to be more judicious with his runs down the field. Nick Foles won the Super Bowl for the Eagles last season but they’d much rather have Wentz play in this year’s title game.
