CommishRx: Know the Rules – It’s Your Responsibility to Stay Informed
When was the last time you read your fantasy league’s rules? Have you done it yet? At the beginning of each season, always take a moment to review your league rules and scoring.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re new to fantasy, or have been doing it for a long time. It’s quite easy to become complacent. If you take things for granted, you’re more likely to miss changes in your league settings.
If the platform your league plays on has new features, you should know. If your commissioner has decided to make a rule change, you should know.
And, since not all commissioners are created equally, it’s your responsibility as a fantasy player to take charge. Make sure it’s you who has control over your own fantasy destiny.

Good Cop, Bad Cop
You may have a commissioner who is really good at communicating with the league. They announce all rules changes. They will also alert the league of any changes to the platform you’re using.
They make your fantasy life easy.
On the other hand, you may have a commissioner who makes announcements at the last minute. They will modify rules and let you know after the fact. They may even change the rules without telling you.
They make your fantasy life, well, not so great.
No matter the type of commissioner you have, you’re still the leader of your own parade.
Staying on Point
You definitely don’t want to be caught doing your best Rip Van Winkle impression when it comes to scoring changes.
Scoring rules can have a direct impact on how you draft. How points are rewarded can make a big difference when choosing between two seemingly comparable players in the later rounds of a draft.
For example, this season Yahoo’s PPR default setting is now 1/2 point. They have also changed their WR3 slot to a Flex (W/R/T) slot.
Yahoo! leaguers, did you have your draft already without realizing this?
Take the Wheel
At the end of the day, no one else is responsible for keeping you current with your league’s settings. Apply the same energy and attention to this area just as you would in tracking free agent signings. You would never ignore that news, would you?
You’re the one in control of your fantasy health and success. Keep it that way.
