Everything you need to know from the weekend’s European action, including a big performance by Axel Witsel for Borussia Dortmund.

All the four major European leagues outside of England are now underway, with the league tables taking shape already.

At the end of August, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and PSG will all top their respective tables, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich in second position.

Spanish top two on top

In La Liga, only the two usual suspects have managed full points after two matches, although Levante, Athletic Bilbao and Huesca could all join them when they play on Monday night.

Real Madrid came from a goal down to beat Getafe 4-1 with Karim Benzema scoring twice, while the previous day Barcelona had beaten Real Valladolid 1-0 with Ousmane Dembele’s goal the difference in that one.

Atletico Madrid got their first win of the season in typical fashion, beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano. Antoine Griezmann got his first of the season in that game.

Elsewhere, Sevilla drew 0-0 with Villarreal, Valencia fell to a shock 2-0 loss at Espanyol, and Leganes drew 2-2 at home to Real Sociedad.

Milan collapse in Naples

The game of the weekend in Italy saw Milan travel to Napoli; Giacomo Bonaventura and Davide Calabria put Gennaro Gattuso’s side two goals ahead, before Napoli turned the game around thanks to two goals from Piotr Zielinski and another from Dries Mertens, which proved to be the winner.

Cristiano Ronaldo is yet to get off the mark for Juventus but his team find themselves top of Serie A after two matches, with Napoli and SPAL also having picked up six points so far.

Juventus beat Lazio 2-0 thanks to goals from Miralem Pjanic and Mario Mandzukic, while SPAL overcame Parma by a goal to nil on Sunday with Mirko Antenucci scoring the decisive goal.

Chievo Verona are currently bottom of the table having lost both of their matches against Juventus and Fiorentina.

Nice’s early struggles

After three games, PSG are top but Dijon are the surprise package early on. They are the closest chasers to the league champions, with both teams having a 100 percent record and PSG ahead only on goals scored.

Dijon won 4-0 away at Nice on Saturday, with Patrick Vieira coming under pressure already. Nice have drawn once and lost twice so far this season having sold key men Alassane Plea, Maxime Le Merchand and Jean Michael Seri during the summer.

Elsewhere, Lyon are third having beaten Strasbourg by two goals to nil on Friday night and Bordeaux beat Monaco 2-1 despite Samuel Kalu missing a penalty late on with the scores still level for the hosts. Francois Kamano netted in the second minute of added time to secure the points.

Witsel off to a flyer

The Bundesliga was the last of the major European leagues to get underway, only beginning this weekend.

Borussia Dortmund achieved the result of the opening day with a 4-1 demolition of RB Leipzig. Axel Witsel scored the pick of the goals in that game as he opened his Dortmund account with an overhead kick.

Bayern Munich beat Hoffenheim 3-1 at the Allianz Arena on Friday night to putĀ them second. It took an 82nd-minute penalty from Robert Lewandowski to put them ahead in the game, before Arjen Robben added another goal in injury time.

Borussia Monchengladbach beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 with Jonas Hoffman and Fabian Johnson scoring the goals after Thorgan Hazard, brother of Eden, had missed a penalty early on, while Wolfsburg, who almost went down last season, got off to a good start by beating Schalke 2-1 at the Volkswagen Arena.
