Dallas Stars are it all wrong when it comes to Tyler Seguin’s new deal

Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin gave an update on the negotiations between himself and management for a contract extension. The results? Well, they aren’t good.
Tyler Seguin isn’t happy right now. From the interview he gave on Tuesday in regards to the final year of his contract, that much is clear.
What also came to light is the surprising revelation that, while Seguin is set to become the most sought after free agent next July, there have been almost no discussions on an extension since the draft was held in June.
For those not in the know, June was a full two months back and we’re now coming up on two weeks until NHL preseason.
At this point, and without diving too far in to rant territory (though we might), we aren’t sure what general manager Jim Nill is doing. Rumors have flown across the summer’s air that Dallas wants Erik Karlsson. Of course, who doesn’t want a former Norris Trophy winning defenseman?
Trade talks between the Stars and Ottawa Senators have come and gone a few times. But with that said, trading for Karlsson doesn’t seem like it should be at the top of Nill’s priority list when your best player just put up 40 goals and your team still ranked 18th in scoring. Never mind the fact that your defense was seventh best in goals against, fourth in shots against and is already loaded with talent.
But we digress. Seguin is disappointed, and rightfully so. I mean, he only mentioned the word multiple times. As Stars fans, well we should be feeling fairly disappointed at this stage also. If talks were ongoing and had simply come to an impasse on money, this would be easier to understand.
To not even embark on negotiations yet with one of the best young players in the league? A player who came with warning labels but has proven to be an incredible talent in the community? That’s just foolish. Seguin dismissed the comparisons to John Tavares, who spurned the New York Islanders for the Toronto Maple Leafs in this years free agency period. He was right to wave those away. At least the Islanders made their attempt to retain Tavares.
Certainly, there’s still time for Nill and the Stars to extend Seguin and keep him around. It could happen tomorrow, or a month down the line. But this isn’t a good look. If anyone was hoping Tyler wouldn’t notice that he’s being given the silent treatment, he noticed.
