Matchups to Watch

Often times the discussion in college football centers around one side of the ball versus the other. However, it is fun to watch individual matchups that can swing a game. This game features a lot of those types of matchups.

Demarcus Lawrence and Brian Burns versus Virginia Tech offensive line

The talented duo along the Florida State defensive line is Demarcus Christmas on the inside and Brian Burns off the edge. Both showed flashes of dominance a year ago and should continue their progression in 2018. Burns especially looks like he can be a game changer off the edge. Christmas could take advantage of an offensive interior that lost powerhouse Wyatt Teller to the NFL for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech offensive line is a solid group but does not stand out as an elite group. Quarterback Josh Jackson will need to be both a runner and thrower to keep the unit guessing. The Hokie offense will need to produce early to limit Burns ability to attack Jackson on long down and distances. This matchup will dictate just how explosive Virginia Tech is offensively.

Cam Akers versus Virginia Tech front four

The Hokies lost their defensive tackles from a season ago on a defense that was one of the country’s best. After allowing only 119 yards per game on the ground, it could be tough sledding for star running back Cam Akers. After an impressive freshman performance, Akers needs to be the stability offensively for the Seminoles.

Florida State has had trouble on their offensive line for years. This year is not looking much better. Francois and fellow quarterback James Blackman were under constant pressure a year ago. Hopes are better with four of five starters returning for 2018. A strong defensive line like the Hokies will give that unit trouble, even with the experience. Akers may be in for a long day, especially if they do not get going early.
