What better way to kick off the three-game suspension for Urban Meyer than to do what he does best: put up big points in non-conference play against inferior foes. Ryan Day had no problem putting points on the board against a hapless Oregon State defense and the Buckeyes finished with a cool 77 to the Beavers’ 31. The blowout win won’t be enough to move Ohio State up since Oregon State is one step above an FCS foe at the moment.

The Wisconsin Badgers didn’t have much trouble with Western Kentucky as the Hilltoppers are a far cry from what they used to be a few years ago. Wisconsin’s defense locked down the once-proud offense, holding the Hilltoppers to just three points while Alex Hornibrook looked improved under center and Johnathan Taylor was his old self in the backfield with 145 yards and two scores. Wisconsin will hold the No. 4 spot right ahead of Big Ten foe Ohio State.

The reigning national runner-up opened the season with a cupcake in Austin Peay and Georgia had no problem running the Governors out of Athens with a blowout victory. The Bulldogs picked right up where they left off, opening with a 45-0 win over Austin Peay and Jake Fromm looked like a stud yet again. He passed for 157 yards and two touchdowns while attempting just 16 passes. The run game will have a big say in this team’s success this season.

Clemson came into the season with very few question marks, especially under center, but now one stands out above the rest after the opening win over Furman: who should start in Week 2? Kelly Bryant didn’t look bad in the comfortable win over Furman, showing some solid running ability with his decent arm, but Trevor Lawrence just has superstar written all over him and he fared well against the Paladins, tossing three scores. The No. 2 team has a quarterback controversy.

Speaking of a quarterback controversy, Alabama head coach Nick Saban doesn’t want to talk about the problem he created under center. Tua Tagovailoa is clearly the better option to start for the Tide under center, but Saban won’t say a bad thing about Jalen Hurts. That may change if Tagovailoa continues to have games like he did against Louisville. He passed for 227 yards and two scores while rushing for another touchdown as the Tide blew Louisville out, 51-14.
