Watford have come out of the gates strong. Very, very strong! Taking all nine points from their first three matches, Watford are one of the best surprises of the young Premier League season. Tabbed as a relegation candidate by most, the Hornets sit in a Champions League spot and one of only four unbeaten and untied clubs.
We may not have expected to be talking about this squad in the same breathe as Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham, but a strong attack has bolstered their fortunes. Roberto Pereyra has been a godsend to a club that deigned not to spend to replace star attacker Richarlison. Through three matches he’s netted three goals, and looks to be capitalizing on the potential seen in him when he became Watford’s record singing a couple summers ago. Manager Javi Garcia will point to his defense — which has only allowed two goals — as the reason for the clubs successes so far.
That defense will face their tallest task yet, however, as Spurs come in riding high after embarrassing Manchester United at home Monday. Lucas Moura and Harry Kane have combined better than anyone could have expected as a striking pair, with Kane’s all around excellence and clinical finishing helping to free up Lucas and his blistering speed. For a team that made no summer signings, Lucas has added a new layer to the Tottenham attack. Mauricio Pochettino’s defense is also a case of an old face returning to make an impact. After being banished from the lineup due to ongoing contract talks, and a prolonged transfer saga over the summer, Toby Alderweireld has taken up his position in the Spurs back line once again, and is showing off some of the form that had him mentioned as one of the best central defenders in the world. Spurs will be leaning on him, Jan Vertonghen, and the rest of the defense if this Watford attack proves to be as legitimate as it seems.
