During Tuesday’s media conference call, Gennady Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez discredited the accomplishments of Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Chepo Reynoso.

On Tuesday, Sept. 4, with 11 days to go until fight night, Gennady Golovkin and his trainer Abel Sanchez addressed the media in a conference call. They talked about several topics ranging from Golovkin’s desire to punish Canelo Alvarez to the manner in which Alvarez will wrap his hands.

Nothing new was unearthed, but Sanchez didn’t appreciate Chepo Reynoso’s comments about Golovkin on HBO’s 24/7: Canelo vs. Golovkin 2.

Reynoso is Alvarez’s trainer, and on 24/7, he made disparaging remarks about Golovkin and his boxing skills. Reynoso said:

"Beating Golovkin doesn’t require much. Golovkin is a donkey who doesn’t think. He doesn’t have a thought in his head. He’s a man who comes forward throwing the same punches. There’s not much we need to change."

It’s obvious that Reynoso’s comments came from a place of anger. Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a draw a year ago, so Golovkin had to do something right.

When asked about Reynoso’s comments in the media call, Sanchez unleashed a biting critique of Reynoso’s achievements as a boxing trainer.

"Chepo Reynoso has never had an Olympian. Chepo Reynoso has never had a triple medalist. Chepo Reynoso has never had 18 world champions as I have. Chepo Reynoso comes from Canela. So when he gets to that level, maybe he can speak in an intelligent manner. If you look at Gennady’s record, he’s beaten a lot of the champions in his way and all of the champions that are champions now he’s beaten in the amateurs. To see somebody talk like that is ridiculous."

Sanchez took Reynoso’s comments personally, and he responded with a harsh yet accurate comparison between himself and Reynoso. Undoubtedly, Sanchez has succeeded on a greater capacity as a boxing trainer than Reynoso. His comments are sharp because they are blindingly truthful.

However, talk is cheap, as the old cliché goes. If Golovkin losses to Alvarez, then his words lose their worth. Sanchez has drawn a line in the sand and his reputation is on the line. He seems very confident about Golovkin’s chances. Tune in on Saturday, Sept. 15 to see who wins the Golovkin/Alvarez rematch.
