Giants already have a plan for when Eli retires

The New York Giants cut Eli Manning’s backup, but they insist they have a plan for life without their quarterback.

When the Giants drafted Saquon Barkley out of Penn State, it was a statement to the league that Eli Manning was still the team’s quarterback for the time being. The Giants further proved that point recently by releasing their backup quarterback, 2017 third-round pick Davis Webb. Manning is 37, and the team knows Manning won’t be there forever. But it is currently looking for a serviceable backup in case Manning is hurt or suffers a dip in performances.

Although the Giants are looking in a short-term window as of late, they insist they have a plan for when Manning retires or the team moves on from the two-time Super Bowl MVP. It’s just not what we would expect.

“At this point, we do [have a plan] right now,” Shurmur said Monday, per the New York Post. “It’s just not what everyone outside our building predicted what the plan was.”

“Plan B for this season also remains uncertain,” the Post’s report continued.

“While it appeared rookie Kyle Lauletta and journeyman Alex Tanney would compete to become Manning’s backup, the Giants will also host veteran Matt McGloin for a workout Tuesday, according to an NFL Network report.”

The Giants are showing us they’re all in on the Eli-youth movement combo they have going on. Odell Beckham Jr. and Barkley are primed to be the face of the Giants for years to come. But it’s understandablef the Giants want to bank on a quarterback with the pedigree of Manning’s for a year or two.
