NHL should not get rid of Stanley Cup ‘keg stand’
By Kareem Gantt
The Stanley Cup ‘keg stand’ has long been a tradition in the NHL, and now, some party poopers from the Hall of Fame want to rain beer on this tradition.
The best moment from the Washington Capitals celebration of their first-ever Stanley Cup came from the man who led them to hockey’s greatest accomplishment: Alex Ovechkin.
In an Instagram post that has come to symbolize Washington’s endless summer of Cup Love, the post shows Ovechkin doing the “keg stand” with the cup.
The “keg stand” is when a person does a handstand while their friends (or strangers) hoist them in the air, all the while the person consumes as much beer as possible from the cup.
It’s a harmless tradition that has been practiced for years, but the Hockey Hall of Fame wants to throw all sorts of beer on the fun.
According to ABC News, the Hall of Fame has asked that players not do the “keg stand” with the Cup, for fear that it may be damaged, or, God forbid, a player falls head first into the cup.
Now, the HOF has some legitimate concerns about the “keg stands.” The Cup is revered and a treasure, and if a team happens to damage it, then we could see a team sold off just to pay for the damage.
Obviously, we were kidding with that last statement. We think, anyway …
Anyway, there are some great concerns with teams doing the “keg stands” with Lord Stanley”s Cup, but this is one of those instances where tradition should triumph responsibility. It’s fun to watch the league’s best stars do college fraternity-like stunts with the trophy, and it’s a hit with the fans as well.
So, please Hall of Fame, lay off of this one and let the players party with The Cup the way they want to party with it.
