Holes 14 and 15

Hole 14: Par 5 – Pebble Beach #14

Pebble Beach is widely regarded as an American treasure. It adds up that it hosts the AT&T Pro Am, where America’s most valued treasures, celebrities, enjoy its scenic coastline layout. When I think of Pebble Beach, I think of my brother climbing down the cliffs to attempt to hit a shot from the beach. However, we aren’t headed to the iconic coastline holes, we’re playing the mean-spirited par 5 14th (skip to 5:30 for a flyover). Let’s go with the 2010 conditions, which led Paul Goydos to describe an approach shot as “trying to stop a pitching wedge on a moving school bus.”  Good luck!

Hole 15: Par 5 – The Old Course at St Andrews #5

After getting rocked by Pebble you can’t even see straight. Well, good news, next up you get to try on the Spectacles. The devious duo of pot bunkers lay in wait on the Old Course’s first par 5, staring down second shots and daring players to keep the ball center cut, or perhaps “right between the eyes” is a better way to say it. A typical 60-yard bunker shot leaves most golfers scratching their head, stuck between clubs and unsure how to approach the swing. Now imagine facing that shot from the Spectacles, where you’re standing so deep that your line of vision is restricted to the familiar and all too appropriate depressing grey skies of a British Open Sunday.
