DraftKings Main MLB Picks September 5: Can we trust Wheeler in L.A.?

We have a heavy main slate even on a travel day with 12 games in the main DraftKings slate. However, we only have two pitchers priced as aces, but three more are over $9,000. It gets pretty thin after that. Where can we find a bargain? There is Coors on this slate, after all. Let’s check it out!

Chicago and Denver are going to be dodging showers off and on all night. I generally think the games get in eventually, but SP’s are not safe in either from the looks of it. This is something you want to keep an eye on.

The only wind is a 12 mph crosswind in Chicago unless the roof is open in Miami. Wind is blowing in from left at the same speed in that case.

We will provide you with several options to build your lineup here. Want to spend all your money on pitchers and play bargain bats? We will highlight who is worth the money. Want to punt arms and pay up for the big boppers? We can help you with that as well, and everything in between!

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on!

ST PETERSBURG, FL – AUGUST 07: Tyler Glasnow #20 of the Tampa Bay Rays pitches during a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Tropicana Field on August 7, 2018 in St Petersburg, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Jameson Taillon ($9,900): Taillon has had trouble with the Reds overall, but he has racked up 74.7 DraftKings points on them in three starts this year. The elevated strikeout total helps carry his total against the Reds, but Taillon has been cruising lately anyway. His ERA is 2.70 since the break. I don’t see much of a reason not to use him here.

Tyler Glasnow ($9,500): Glasnow has been brilliant lately, and racked up 18.9 DraftKings points on the Jays in Toronto about three weeks ago. He only went five innings in that game, but Glasnow lasted seven in his last start. If he goes seven here, Glasnow wont have any issues picking up enough points for his price tonight.

Hyun-Jin Ryu ($9,200): The Mets are hitting just .156 in 45 at bats against Ryu with two solo homers and 14 strikeouts. Ryu has a brilliant 1.51 ERA in six home starts this year. He has also not given up more than three runs in a start this season. Ryu has one of the better floors on the slate, but I’m not sure how high the upside is. Against the Mets, it’s higher than usual though.

Middle Tier:

Jhoulys Chacin ($8,000): I keep waiting for Chacin to get smacked, but he never does. In two starts against the Cubs this year, Chacin has a staggering 64 DraftKings points. He has not given up a run in 13 innings and has struck out 17. That’s domination, folks.

Jose Quintana ($7,700): Quintana has already faced Milwaukee four times this year. He has averaged a solid 19.2 DraftKings points against them. Quintana has an ERA more than a run lower on the road, and Milwaukee is chock full of lefties, so there is solid potential here despite the limited upside.

Framber Valdez ($7,100): The Twins aren’t hitting lefties well lately. Hell, they aren’t hitting anyone well lately. Valdez has turned in three strong outings in the majors this year. I see another solid one with DraftKings points in the mid teens once again. I don’t see the Astros leaving Valdez out there long enough for him to have massive upside, but Valdez is decent enough to use tonight.

Bargain Pitchers:

Jaime Barria ($6,000): People keep waiting for the Barria blowup, but it hasn’t happened yet. The Rangers are only hitting .200 in 55 at bats against Barria with just one run to go with 14 strikeouts. This offense is dangerous, so there is risk here, but they obviously aren’t seeing the ball well against Barria so far. This could be a great time to take advantage of Barria’s nice numbers, especially if Colon opposes him.

Sandy Alcantara ($5,700): Alcantara was solid in his only major league appearance this year, giving up only one run in five innings. It was against the Mets though. However, there is decent potential for Alcantara is this huge ballpark. The Phillies offense finally got going last night, but it has been a slow September for them so far.

Antonio Senzatela ($5,300): Senzatela dominated the Giants in San Francisco earlier this summer, but he has still struggled at home. Still, Senzatela has been better at home lately, and this Giants offense has very little power left in it. There is solid potential for Senzatela here, but a blowup is possible since he has had trouble at home.

ST PETERSBURG, FL – JULY 31: Mike Trout #27 of the Los Angeles Angels hits a homer in the seventh inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31, 2018 at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, Florida. (Photo by Julio Aguilar/Getty Images) /

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Homer Bailey:

The Pittsburgh offense is starting two wake up again. They are also hitting .295 with three homers and 17 runs in 112 at bats against Bailey. Cervelli, Gregory Polanco, and Starling Marte have the homers. Corey Dickerson is 4-9 against Bailey, and is very reasonably priced. I also like Josh Harrison and Elias Diaz if they start.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Bartolo Colon:

Colon will be opposing a pitcher that is less than half his age in this one. That is a testament to how great of a career he has had. However, Colon’s ERA is up over two runs since the break. He is not pitching well at all right now. Righties seem to hit him harder, so Mike Trout is a must play. Jefry Marte, Andrelton Simmons, whoever catches, Jabari Blash, and David Fletcher are all cheap and are all worth a look in a stack against Bartolo.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Tanner Roark:

Roark has a 4.88 ERA in 13 home starts, and the Cardinals are hitting him well overall. The Cards are hitting .303 with two homers and 16 runs in just 76 at bats against Roark. Harrison Bader and Marcell Ozuna have the homers. Matt Carpenter is just 1-8, but I trust what he has done lately more. Yadier Molina is hitting .364 in 11 at bats. Tyler O’Neill and Paul DeJong are worth a look as well.

Chicago White Sox vs. Jordan Zimmerman:

The White Sox strike out a lot, but they can do a lot of damage when they get a hold of something. They are hitting .351 in 114 at bats against Zimmerman with four homers and a staggering 27 runs. Matt Davidson is the only one with multiple homers. Daniel Palka and Avi Garcia have homered off of Zimmerman as well. Omar Narvaez is 8-12, but has no counting stats. Tim Anderson is my favorite to finish off the stack. By the way, I love Kopech on the other side of this, but he dominated the Tigers in his other start against them and he still didn’t come close to what we need for his price.

Seattle Mariners vs. Andrew Cashner:

It has been mostly a rough year for Cashner. This isn’t a huge place to stack, but it’s an overlooked west coast game. The Mariners have five homers and 23 runs in 185 at bats against Cashner so far. Kyle Seager is just $3,400, and he has two of those homers. Nelson Cruz, Mitch Haniger, and Denard Span have all homered off of Cashner as well. Jean Segura and Robinson Cano wouldn’t be bad additions here either.

WASHINGTON, DC – AUGUST 07: Bryce Harper #34 and Juan Soto #22 of the Washington Nationals celebrate after scoring on a double by Ryan Zimmerman #11 (not pictured) in the sixth inning against the Atlanta Braves at Nationals Park on August 7, 2018 in Washington, DC. Top Tier:

Andrew Suarez has pitched well lately, even on the road so I’m not stacking Rockies on him. However, Arenado murders lefties at home. Trevor Story is worth a look as well if you don’t mind wrapping up 11 grand in two hitters.

The Rangers have a ton of left handed power. Even though they have had limited success against Barria, taking a one off of Gallo or Odor isn’t the worst idea I’ve heard.

Anthony Rizzo has smacked two homers off of Chacin, but of course, none of them are this year. If you take a stab at Chacin hoping for an implosion, Rizzo and Murphy are the way to go.

Middle Tier:

I’m not really going to go after Miles Mikolas, but both Juan Soto and Bryce Harper have homered off of him. Both are decent plays.

Scooter Gennett homered twice last night, and he is 10-27(.370) with a homer and seven RBI off of Taillon. Billy Hamilton has actually homered twice off of Taillon and swiped three bags. Those are the only Reds I would really consider though except for maybe Jose Peraza. Peraza is 10-19, but has not counting stats.

I’m not paying the premium on Severino because the A’s don’t strike out a whole lot and Severino has mostly struggled since the break. Matt Chapman and Mark Canha are my favorite places to take a shot here, but I’m not making it a priority.

I’m probably not stacking Orioles against Mike Leake simply because there isn’t much left. Jonathan Villar would be my favorite play. Using Leake isn’t a terrible idea, but he has no upside.

Mike Moustakas has homered three times against Jose Quintana so far. Ryan Braun has got him twice. Lorenzo Cain is hitting .301 in 73 at bats with a homer, nine runs, and five RBI.

I don’t know how much Phillies exposure I want to Alcantara, but Roman Quinn is definitely worth playing until he cools off. IF he cools off. Nick Williams looks tempting too.

I’m not all that excited about Nick Pivetta, even at Marlins Park. I’m not that excited about the Marlins either. Derek Dietrich is the one with a homer, so if I use anyone, it will be him.

You have to be brave to use Fiers against the Yankees, but most of the damage has been done by two guys. Aaron Hicks is 3-5 with two homers and t

Bargain Shoppers:

Zack Wheeler has been brilliant lately, but he has poor numbers against the Dodgers. I wouldn’t trust him here, but I wouldn’t load up on Dodgers either. Grandal is worth a look since he is 2-6 with a homer. Taking advantage of a low priced Cody Bellinger is a good idea too. Bellinger is 3-5 against Wheeler. All three hits are homers and he has eight RBI already!

I still don’t really trust Aaron Sanchez. Willy Adames and Jake Bauers look like good places to take a shot. I’m not opposed to Mallex Smith or C.J. Cron either if you find yourself with a surplus of cash.

Joe Panik has slugged two homers against Antonio Senzatela in just 12 at bats. He is cheap, so I like taking a shot with Panik here. Brandon Crawford could be worth a look as well.

For some odd reason, Jake Odorizzi has pitched well against Houston. Brian McCann has three homers and ten RBI against Odorizzi. The rest of the team is just 13-51 with no homers, two runs, and 10 strikeouts. This might not be the time to go after Odorizzi, but I totally get it if you want to.
