Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers once had a rich history of winning Stanley Cups (5) during the 1980’s, but the last Cup was won back in 1990.

Now, a new group of Oilers are trying to erase that Stanley Cup drought, which also includes not only their best player but one of the league’s top players.

Forward Connor McDavid is Edmonton’s best player that is still searching for a Stanley Cup championship. Yes, McDavid is only entering his fourth season, but he’s the obvious choice on the team’s roster to make this list.

In three seasons, the former first-overall selection (2015) has already won a Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP), Art Ross Trophy (League’s leading scorer) and the Ted Lindsay Award (most outstanding player). There’s no doubting that McDavid will continue to collect numerous awards and hockey hardware as his career progresses, but the big questions is when or if he will win a Stanley Cup?

It only took Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins four seasons to win their first Stanley Cup together, but it did take Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals thirteen years to win their first Cup.

The 21-year-old is averaging more than a point per game with 256 points (87 goals, 169 assists) in 209 games played. Those numbers are comparable to Sidney Crosby who recorded 294 career points (99 goals, 195 assists) in 213 games played.

Now, the Oilers can only hope that McDavid can lead them to numerous Stanley Cups, so that McDavid avoids going down as one of the NHL’s best skaters to never win a Stanley Cup championship.
