Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball Picks For September 7th
For a bit of a different fantasy experience, try Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball, which tends to have dramatically different pricing than the “main” sites (DraftKings and FanDuel). Between the two, Yahoo! tends to play out more like DraftKings in that you need around 3-4 discount guys to really work out in order to come out with a winner. That being said, there are two stacks that I like in particular (along with a few one-offs), which I am going to get to by paying down at pitcher (a bit of a favorite strategy of mine in tournaments, which I favor over cash games in general).
If you have not played Yahoo! yet, they have a generous award of Fantasy Points that they give all new players, which you can use in contests for all of the major sports. Given the differential in pricing for some players, it is good to try some “other” sites in order to incorporate players you couldn’t otherwise afford. My Pitcher Picks
Fantasy baseball (or baseball DFS) can be a tricky game in terms of choosing pitching. Let me say first that I really do not blame anyone for playing it safe in cash and going with the top guys on this slate, i.e. Snell, Nola and Carrasco. However, Yahoo! is a two-pitcher format with offensive points hard to come by and prices for pitchers quite steep. Also, I have two mini-stacks in mind, so I am looking for mid-range/bargain options here.
In tonight’s slate, I really like James Paxton ($44). Paxton generated an impressive 20 swinging strikes, striking out 10 against the Athletics in his last start, which was his first since coming back off the disabled list. I expect that his velocity will be up against the Yankees, who do strike out a fair amount. In a perfect world, he wouldn’t be facing the Yankees, but the Athletics are also a potent offense and I’ll take 10 strikeouts all day in DFS.

I also like Steven Matz ($34). Matz has been great lately with almost 11 strikeouts per nine innings and a sub-2 ERA in his last three starts. Pair that with the fact that he is facing the Phillies, whose 24.6% strikeout rate is amongst the worst in the MLB. Their team average is .237 and they struggle against lefties, giving Matz a safe floor. Matz is perfectly capable of spinning a gem here at a bargain price.
Stacks
For a second (mini) stack, give me the Twins. I filled the outfield with impressive bargain picks Jake Cave ($18) and Eddie Rosario ($10). I am especially high on Cave, but I feel as though the peripherals for both of these guys are better than their performance has been. A pitcher who has issues with lefties and hard contact is a perfect chance for the Twins lefties to shine and Cave (5th) and Rosario (3rd) are both at nice positions in the line-up.
One-offs
I think that Whit Merrifield ($21) is a great one-off here because he has been stealing a lot of bases lately and still has enough pop to take advantage of Steven Gonsalves and his astronomical ERA. He will be leading off tonight, meaning he probably looks to swipe a base or two. He and his teammate Mondesi ($18) would be the beginning of a nice Royals stack, but a Royals stack (or a Blue Jays stack), is an all-or-nothing move that I don’t often like to do.
Although I may be the victim of recency bias here, Corbin does sometimes struggle with hard contact and Kurt Suzuki ($8) is priced just right to take advantage of that with two homers in his last 3 starts.
