Several college football head coaches on the hot seat are in need of a turnaround in Week 2.
Week 1 of the college football season is in the history books and Week 2 has arrived. For the college football coaches on the hot seat, wins are more important now than ever. Considering most lost their first game of the season, things are only going to get tougher from here.
Some won their first game of the season but one win isn’t enough and thus more winning must be on the menu. Week 2 features some interesting games for coaches on the hot seat and for one big name coach in particular, he needs to start stockpiling wins or the hype balloon will pop quickly.
One coach on the hot seat saw his program lose to a FCS team last week. It’s never a good feeling to pay money to a program to come play your team and then lose to them in the process. Here are this week’s hot seat coaches.
Lovie Smith – Illinois
A second-half rally by Illinois helped the program and Lovie Smith avoid a tough loss to begin the season. They now have a win in the books after defeating Kent State and they have yet another opportunity to add a win this week.
Illinois will face Western Illinois at home this week and by all accounts, that should be their second victory of the season. Considering Smith came into this season with only five wins total in his tenure, getting nearly half of that in the first two weeks of the season would be a good place to start.
Smith’s beard grows by the week and so could potentially his victories. Big Ten play is just around the corner and that’s where picking up victories is going to become a lot more difficult, given the nature of the conference.
Still, picking up a couple of wins and heading into conference play would give the Fighting Illini some momentum. If they can carry over their second-half performance into this week, that shaky start to begin last week will be long forgotten.
