Here’s how you can watch The Deuce season 2 premiere starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal online or the old-fashioned way on TV.
HBO’s The Deuce returns tonight with its season 2 premiere episode “Our Raison d’Etre” airing at 9 p.m. ET. You can catch a live stream of Ballers’ latest with HBO Now, Amazon (HBO Channel subscription), Direct TV, or with a free seven-day trial on FuboTV.
The Deuce’s Maggie Gyllenhaal who plays Eileen “Candy” Merrell on the series, recently spoke to The Wall Street Journal about how she had a crush on Ethan Hawke during the time of Waterworld. Her father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, had directed the film at the time and Maggie mentions reconnecting with the Training Day star recently:
"He took me on a walk. I got a huge crush on him as did everyone else at the time. And then he moved into the apartment above our garage when he made “Reality Bites.” I’ve recently reconnected with him, and it’s interesting how something like that goes away."
Future cameo for Hawke on The Deuce, perhaps?
The Deuce’s co-creator David Simon, recently spoke to the The New York Review of Books about the kind of dedication required to make such a show happen. “When you make a series, it’s a commitment of two or three years of your life.” Simon also commented that despite his background in journalism, he’s trying to capture drama when he makes a show, not journalism. That his work is rooted in the “real”:
"I write about people, time, moments, and places. I try to capture them as they existed, as best I can. What I do is rooted in the real, in an attempt to capture a shard of the real. It’s not journalism. It’s drama. That’s still a little different from what people who go to film school, or who want to get into television, bring to the table. It’s also what damages me with a network programmer."
Simon went on to state that, “The things that make a story interesting to me are often the things that thwart the perfect franchise.” A fascinating inside-take on the fine line between crafting the ‘perfect franchise’ and making sure it stays true to a certain vision.
“Our Raison d’Etre” Episode Description:
"Vincent becomes the proprietor of a new mob-backed disco, Club 366; Frankie “borrows” money from Show Land to pay off his debts; Candy plans to make more artful, ambitious adult films; Paul looks to sever mob ties from his current bar."
In the preview trailer for The Deuce’s second season, the city wants to put an end to sex-related businesses and the red light district permanently.
