DraftKings MLB Picks September 10: Is Kluber worth the money?

We have 12 games on Monday, but DraftKings threw the earlier two into a turbo tournament. The remaining ten make up the main DraftKings tournament. There are a couple of aces, a couple of pitchers pitching really well, and a loaded middle tier. Where should we go with this? Let’s take a look!

More from DFS

Rain could be an issue throughout in Philly, but the game should be played. Minneapolis could see some in the late innings, but the game will finish at some point. The big problem area is New York. As it stands now, there is little chance that this game gets played. I would avoid everyone from Mets-Marlins unless the forecast improves over the next few hours.

If the game plays in New York, there will be a stiff wind in from right. The customary wind in the Bay Area is there as well.

We will provide you with several options to build your lineup here. Want to spend all your money on pitchers and play bargain bats? We will highlight who is worth the money. Want to punt arms and pay up for the big boppers? We can help you with that as well, and everything in between!

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on!

PITTSBURGH, PA – AUGUST 17: Trevor Williams #34 of the Pittsburgh Pirates delivers a pitch in the first inning during the game against the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park on August 17, 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Justin Berl/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Corey Kluber ($11,100): It’s hard to use deGrom since the Mets sat him last night on the threat of rain. There is no way he is going out there tonight. That makes Kluber the de facto number one, and the numbers support this. The Rays are only hitting .193 with a solo homer in 57 at bats with 19 strikeouts. Kluber checks all the boxes here. His strikeouts are down this year, so don’t expect that same 33% rate to carry over here, but I still see Kluber flirting with 30 DraftKings points.

J.A. Happ ($9,300): Some of the luster has worn off of Happ, and if you go solely by past numbers, they say don’t play him. However, since the Twins dumped Dozier and Escobar, they have really struggled against lefties. The Twins strike out a lot. They may get lucky with a long ball or two, but I see Happ having a very good game here. He should be in the 20’s for DraftKings points.

Trevor Williams ($9,000): The Cardinals have pounded Trevor Williams in his career, but Williams has a 1.42 ERA over his last ten starts. Two starts ago he faced this same Cardinals team in St. Louis and allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings en route to 29.9 DraftKings points. With the way Williams is rolling, I have no issue using him here.

German Marquez ($9,000): Marquez has absolutely awful numbers in his career against Arizona, but he has more than 20 DraftKings points in eight straight starts. The only team to keep him under 20 in the last ten was Arizona, but they beat on Marquez in Phoenix nine days after he dominated them in Denver. Marquez is certainly worth a look here, but there is some risk involved.

Middle Tier:

Jake Junis ($8,500): Junis has racked up more than 30 DraftKings points in back to back games. One of those was in Cleveland! The White Sox hit him hard earlier this year, but they still strike out a lot. If Junis is on again, he could come close to 30 again. The White Sox strike out enough to give him that kind of potential.

Mike Minor ($8,200): Minor picked up 22.3 DraftKings points six days ago in his only career start against the Angels. That’s good enough for me to consider him here. The caveat is that Minor has struggled some on the road. Angels Stadium isn’t a hitters haven, but it isn’t all that pitcher friendly either.

Kyle Gibson ($8,100): Gibson locked down the Yankees earlier this year, giving up just one hit through six innings and racking up 10 strikeouts. Gibson has not allowed a run to an active Yankee in 40 at bats! His home numbers are now respectable as are his road splits. If you are brave enough to use Gibson against this high powered offense, you could gain separation from the pack and get a decent point total from him. However, there is risk here.

Wade Miley ($7,600): Wrigley can be tough, but Miley has held the Cubs to a .215 average in 93 at bats with only two homers and six runs. The 13 strikeouts leave much to be desired, but he struck out five against the Cubs last week. Miley put up 23.1 DraftKings points in that game. If he comes anywhere near that, I think we will be happy with that price tag.

Bargain Pitchers:

Jaime Barria ($7,400): The Rangers are only hitting .183 with no homers and just one run to go with 19 strikeouts in 71 at bats. Barria has already made four starts against Texas this year and come away with 79.6 DraftKings points. If he can get you 20 for this price, you are going to climb the leaderboard quickly at the end of the night.

Sean Newcomb ($7,300): The rookie wall has put Newcomb on his back with a 5.37 ERA in his last ten starts. However, the Giants offense just isn’t very good. Newcomb gets a huge park upgrade going to San Francisco. He could turn out to be another huge bargain tonight. There are pitchers that you can pay up for, but I’m not sure they will be enough better than what we can get in this tier.

Zack Godley ($6,400): The Rockies are only hitting .223 against Godley in 112 at bats with just one homer and 10 runs to go with 29 strikeouts. Godley has been about as tough to trust as anyone in the majors because of the inconsistency, but he is 3-0 with a 3.80 ERA in three Coors Field starts.

Lucas Giolito ($4,700): The list of teams that Giolito has pitched well against is very short, but the Royals are on it. The current Royals are hitting just .170 in 47 at bats with only a solo homer and 10 strikeouts to show for it. Giolito picked up 28.8 DraftKings points in two starts against the Royals earlier this year. He has actually pitched better on the road. To me, Giolito looks way underpriced here.

TORONTO, ON – SEPTEMBER 6: Francisco Lindor #12 of the Cleveland Indians is congratulated by Jose Ramirez #11 after hitting a solo home run in the first inning during MLB game action against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on September 6, 2018 in Toronto, Canada. Philadelphia Phillies vs. Erick Fedde:

The Phils have hit Fedde hard so far with three homers, nine runs, and a .381 average in just 42 at bats. Why would it get better here? Asdrubal Cabrera, Kingery, and Hoskins have the homers. Alfaro is another good pick if he starts. I’m finishing this off with either Cesar Hernandez or Nick Williams.

Cleveland Indians vs. Diego Castillo/Jalen Beeks:

Beeks has pitched well when not starting the game. That said, this offense is dangerous. All Cleveland righties are in play here with Ramirez, Lindor, and Edwin being the top plays. Brandon Guyer and Rajai Davis are worth a look if they are in there, but I think I prefer Yan Gomes.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Adam Wainwright:

The Pirates are hitting .295 with five homers and 18 runs in 139 at bats against Waino. Jordy Mercrer has two of those homers, and will only set you back $2,900. Josh Harrison, Starling Marte, and Josh Bell have the other homers. Cervelli is 3-8 against Wainwright, so he is worth a look took. I also like Corey Dickerson here.

PHOENIX, AZ – SEPTEMBER 06: Paul Goldschmidt #44 of the Arizona Diamondbacks hits a solo home run in the ninth inning of the MLB game against the Atlanta Braves at Chase Field on September 6, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Jennifer Stewart/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

The Nationals have hit Arrieta well enough that I’m not using him here, even at home. I would rather take a shot with Turner or Juan Soto, both of whom have homered off of him. Mark Reynolds has as well, and he is having a big September.

I’m not opposed to using Paul Goldschmidt even if I use Marquez. Goldy has four homers and seven RBI in only 20 at bats against Marquez. David Peralta is worth a look as well, but I’m not all that crazy about either side at Coors tonight.

Mike Trout and Ohtani both have homers off of Mike Minor, but I don’t know that I would go any further than that with Angels.

Matt Carpenter is 7-16(.438) with three homers and six RBI in his career against Trevor Williams. He or Paul DeJong are the only Cardinals I would really consider here.

Charlie Blackmon has the homer off of Zack Godley with three of the RBI. I’m not all that crazy about any other Rockies, but I couldn’t argue with David Dahl or Parra either.

Middle Tier:

I’m a little nervous about Jon Lester at home against the Brewers. He locked them down earlier this year in Beer City, but his overall numbers aren’t great against Milwaukee. That said, if you are chasing homers, only one current Brewer has taken Lester deep. It’s Curtis Granderson, who has done so three times. Ryan Braun is 8-18 lifetime against Lester, so he is worth a look as well.

Salvador Perez has the homer off of Giolito. I don’t know that I trust any other Royals enough to really go after Giolito though.

I’m not really sure that I trust Dereck Rodriguez against the Braves, and definitely not for the price. Freddie Freeman is worth a look in this tier, and Ronald Acuna is always worth a look. Not much is going to fly out of this park though.

Bargain Shoppers:

This looks like a good night to take advantage of some cheap White Sox. Matt Davidson and Yoan Moncada have both homered twice off of Jake Junis. Welington Castillo has one as well. All of them are $3,700 or less.

If I do take a shot with Cubs, I’m likely going cheap with Albert Almora. He is about the only one with any kind of success against Wade Miley so far.

Logan Forsythe is the only Twin I would even consider tonight. He is 7-22(.318) with a homer and two RBI against Happ.
