Matt Breida, San Francisco 49ers

Stats: 11 carries, 46 yards, one reception and five yards

The San Francisco 49ers running back situation was up in smoke after the season-ending injury to Jerick McKinnon. This left Alfred Morris and Matt Breida at the top of the depth chart. Morris led the team with 12 carries but struggled to find a rhythm.

Breida finished with 11 carries with an average 4.2 yards per carry. He was also involved in the passing attack hauling in one reception.

This production came against the Minnesota Vikings who are one of the better defenses in the league. They are a group that allowed only 83 rushing yards per game last year. Minnesota’s defense only got better thanks to some offseason additions.

Breida is the more explosive of the two running backs and will be apart of the game plan. His ability help in the passing game is something that should eventually help him out play Morris.

The 49ers will keep Morris in the mix, but he doesn’t offer that big-play ability and is more of a grind it out runner. Breida is coming off a strong rookie season where he showed his value and a connection with Jimmy Garoppolo.
