4. Rookie defenders stole the show

It was a banner debut day for defensive rookies.

Cleveland Browns corner Denzel Ward was excellent, nabbing two interceptions and challenging Antonio Brown at the catch point. Miami Dolphins defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick continually disrupted the Titans’ offense throughout the game. Mike Hughes earned a pick-six for the Vikings as well.

It wasn’t just the defensive backs, either. 49ers linebacker Fred Warner was terrific, while Broncos edge-rusher Bradley Chubb earned half a sack. The Redskins should be happy with Da’Ron Payne’s run-game contributions in the middle of their defense.

And of course, Bears rookie Roquan Smith found a sack on his first career play, while Tremaine Edmunds was one of few bright spots for the Bills.

All of this is to say that the NFL needed impactful defensive players amid the rise of offenses. The early returns of players who were considered pro-ready and later-round picks alike is meaningful as they earn trust and more opportunities.
