4. Southern Miss vs. Appalachian State (-16)

If you were wondering how good some of the teams in lesser conferences were going to be in the 2018 college football season, the Appalachian State Mountaineers gave us all an answer in the first week of action. They gave the Penn State Nittany Lions absolutely everything that they could handle and, if not for a missed field goal at the end of regulation, they would’ve pulled off a huge upset. They ultimately lost in overtime, but still proved that they’re a fiercely competitive team.

That was again cemented last week as they went on the road in a new rivalry game against the Charlotte 49ers and broke down their doors. Appalachian State quarterback Zac Thomas continued to look like a star with a four-touchdown performance and looks to carry that up against Southern Miss this week.

Southern Miss also enters this game with a 1-1 record, but one far less impressive than the Mountaineers’ mark. They beat up on Jacksonville State to start the year, but then fell to UL Monroe last week, highlighted by a late interception that thwarted a comeback for the Golden Eagles.

What this really comes down to is that I believe App State and Southern Miss aren’t on the same level. That’s not to say the Golden Eagles aren’t a decent Conference USA team, but it is to say that the Mountaineers can compete with most teams in all of the sport. As such, I don’t think that this is close and that Appalachian State rolls to another big win on Saturday.
