Mayans MC episode 2 turns up the heat and the body count
Mayans MC kicked off its second episode with a bang and the action continued from there. Here’s a full recap of episode 2 of Mayans MC.
If you weren’t sold on all the action from episode 1 of Mayans MC, episode 2 set the tone very early. Los Olvidados caught up to Emily and her son Christobal and the ensuing actions set the tone for the episode. Christobal was taken, Emily’s driver was shot and Emily was warned, to which she replied “F**k you” in both English and Spanish. Bad ass!
Los Olvidados once seemed like a nuisance to Miguel Galiendo and the cartel, but they’ve now torn his family apart. Miguel and Emily have a strict “no shop talk at home” rule — smart, given his line of work — but that was broken when baby Christobal was stolen by the rebels.
Miguel doesn’t seem overly concerned, but more angry. He knows that if the rebels take his son across the border, he’s going to have a very hard time getting him back. Of course, he is keeping all of this from Emily. More on this later.
Our boy EZ is immediately also met with conflict. He knows where the rebels are, he obviously cares for Emily and he definitely does not want to see her child get hurt. Still, he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place with his brother so deeply involved with Los Olvidados.
Mayans MC Business and Coco’s potential sister
The Mayans MC opens the episode attending to some business of their own. They track down Louie, a drug dealer and porn director, who informs Coco (Richard Cabral) that he unknowingly filmed his underage sister in a scene for one of this films.
The MC forces Louie to double their cut in his work and then Coco reveals to the MC that both of his sisters are older and “have beards thicker than Gilly’s.” Coco later looks up the scene, though, and seems concerned with what he finds.
The episode ends with a twist when Coco picks up his mother, a prostitute, in her place of work, telling her they need to talk. Perhaps he does have a younger sister after all.
Side note: You’ll notice that the actor who plays the drug dealer/director from the Dogwood crew might look familiar. If you’re like me, you were waiting to see him in this show, as he tends to play the same (awesome) character in every show and movie he’s in. This was a nod to that, which made me so damn happy.
You probably know him best as Hector from the Fast and Furious movies or as Moreno from Training Day. His name is Noel Gugliemi. He does an incredible job playing this type of role and I hope we get to see more of him in this series.
Los Olvidados vs. the Galindo cartel
In a viral video message posted by Los Olvidados, the distinct sound of a food truck’s music can be heard in the background. The Galindo cartel manage to get hold of a food truck owner and his son for questioning and the scene leads to our first sign of conflict between EZ and Miguel.
An angry Miguel and his men are torturing the father when EZ steps in and calls him out for treating people poorly. His comments are met with both surprise and fear from the MC and Miguel responds by bringing in the truck owner’s child for torture. The plan is side-barred by Angel, who quickly plays the one card the MC had up their sleeve: the plates of the vehicle that was used to chase down Emily, recognized by EZ’s photographic memory earlier in the episode.
The MC leaves to track down the vehicle, which was abandoned by the rebels in a switch of vehicles to ensure they would not be found. This is troublesome for Galindo, who lost his only lead.
Miguel’s mother, alongside his father’s old business partner (and all-around bad dude) José, tells Miguel of a similar situation they were in when his father was running the cartel. The child that would have been Miguel’s older brother was initially used as a bargaining chip and eventually ended up killed. To ease the pain, they had Miguel.
This seems heartless and dark, but the point of telling Miguel was to ensure he spills blood before the rebels do and in the end, Miguel follows José’s advice to fight fire with fire.
The cartel gruesomely burn the truck owner and his child who were in the area when the video was made and display them in said area for the rebels to see. Los Olvidados and the four Mayans they are working with discover the bodies in a crowded area at the end of the episode.
Obviously this isn’t going to sit well with EZ, who’s deeply intertwined with those on both sides of the fence. Expect this to fuel his growing hatred of Miguel even further.
Reunited and it feels so good probably doesn’t feel very good at the moment
In the final moments of episode 2, Emily visits EZ at his father’s butcher shop. She knows that she is not getting the full story from Miguel and she wants EZ to keep her in the loop. He immediately tells her everything, including the recently found burnt bodies of the food truck owner and his son.
Whether this was smart or not, EZ clearly doesn’t care much for Miguel. Emily is upset with the new information, but has to leave the shop. EZ ensures her that he won’t let anything happen to her baby.
We get one last flashback at the end of the episode in which EZ and his father are watching as a recently deceased woman (likely EZ’s mother) is carted off a crime scene. I’m 95 percent positive this is going to tie into EZ’s prison sentence somehow (dirty cop) but we still need more information.
Other notable scenes
Chuck (Michael Ornstein): A Sons of Anarchy fan favorite has a brief cameo in this episode as the MC visits the junk yard he is currently running to try to get information. If you don’t remember Chucky, he’s the chronic masturbator who had eight out of ten fingers cut off in SoA. He was adopted and put to work by the Sons, who grew to love him.
Angel loves Adelita: At the end of this episode, right before the rebels and the four Mayans members working with them discover the burned bodies, Angel reveals an interesting twist. When Adelita asks Angel if EZ is still in love with Emily. He replies with a comment comparing them to his own love for Adelita. This is sure to complicate things when the two sides inevitable go to war.
The action is just starting to heat up so be sure to tune in next Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET on FX.
