The staredown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin got a bit heated on Friday afternoon.

It’s safe to say Canelo Alvarez and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin are ready to fight again.

During the weigh-ins for their upcoming rematch, things got a bit heated between the two middleweight boxers. As Golovkin finished successfully weighing in, Alvarez took to the scale and also made weight, but it is what happened after that really got the boxing world buzzing.

In the midst of cheers and boos, Alvarez immediately stepped off the scale, walked over to Golovkin and got into his face, prompting several men to step in between the two to separate them in what was probably the most intense moment they have shared since the rematch was announced.

True to his stoic nature, GGG stood in the same place he was initially in while much of the pushing and shoving came from the side of Alvarez. In a video captured by BoxingInsider, Golovkin eventually walked off stage while Canelo posed and shadowboxed for the cameras before walking off shortly after.

Much of the animosity between Alvarez and Golovkin formed after their first meeting almost a year ago. After 12 rounds, the fight was surprisingly ruled a draw, which drew ire and controversy from nearly everyone involved. Talks of a rematch started relatively quickly and everything seemed to be going well until something unexpected happened a few months ago.

Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance, and was temporarily suspended. The fight that was supposed to take place in May had to be put on hold until Alvarez resolved his issues and accepted punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which came in the form of a six-month suspension.

Golovkin went on to fight Vanes Martirosyan on May 5 instead, and finished him by way of knockout in the second round. After the fight, Golovkin made it clear who he wanted next and that was, of course, Alvarez.

With every hurdle now pushed aside, Alvarez and Golovkin look for a more definitive finish in their much-anticipated fight on Saturday, Sept. 15 in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena.
